MPs Introduced to Lifosa’s Operations and Solutions to Boost Energy Efficiency

On Monday 10 January, Lifosa received a delegation from the Parliamentary Commission for Energy and Cohesive Development and hosted an external meeting of the Commission. The members of the Parliament were introduced to the operations of one of Europe’s largest and most advanced manufacturers of phosphorus fertilisers, including its ongoing and completed projects geared towards boosting energy efficiency at Lifosa and ensuring a sustainable business.

“The rational and efficient use of electrical energy is a key strategic objective at Lifosa. We aim to achieve this by engaging in various programmes to improve the efficiency and sustainability of the company’s main line of business – the production of phosphorus fertilisers. In this way, we are making a contribution to achieving the goals expressed in the energy strategies of the European Union and Lithuania. We have consistently supported Europe’s goal of becoming a climate-neutral continent by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions through our investment projects, using electricity from renewable sources and constantly boosting the efficiency of our energy consumption,” noted AB Lifosa CEO, Rimantas Proscevičius.

The MPs attended a presentation of the investment projects that have been already implemented and those that are still in the pipeline, including Lifosa’s energy performance and operating strategy to 2026. Over the next five years, the company intends to focus its investments on improving the efficiency of its sulphuric acid workshop and overhauling and upgrading its phosphoric acid plant. These investment projects are expected to help Lifosa raise its operating efficiency to a new level, by using less energy and natural resources and by continuing to minimise its environmental impact.

As of 2013, the company has invested over EUR 780 thousand in its energy efficiency measures. These investment projects have allowed Lifosa to save more than 10,000 MWh of electrical energy over the course of 9 years. Lifosa makes most (93 per cent) of its own electrical energy. The company also invests in the generation of sustainable electrical energy, with a 1 MW house solar power plant that was launched last year.

The members of the Energy and Sustainable Development Commission were also introduced to the company's investment plans until 2026. Lifosa plans to invest near $ 150 million euros over the next five years. The company intends to allocate the major part of these funds to increase the efficiency of the sulfuric acid plant and to the reconstruction and modernization of the phosphoric acid plant. The investment projects will also help Lifosa operate more efficiently, using energy and natural resources more efficiently and further reducing its environmental impact.
